Bitdefender VPN Protocols Explained: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2

When set to Automatic, Bitdefender chooses the protocol it believes works best for your device and network conditions.

This is the simplest option for beginners because the app handles the technical decisions automatically.

In most situations, Automatic mode works well and requires no manual adjustment.

WireGuard is a modern VPN protocol designed for high speed, strong security, and efficient performance.

Compared to older VPN technologies, WireGuard often provides:

• Faster connection speeds
• Lower battery usage
• Faster reconnections
• Strong modern encryption

For many users, WireGuard offers an excellent balance between speed and security.

It is especially useful for:

• Streaming
• Gaming
• Video calls
• Mobile devices

Because it is relatively new, some restrictive networks may occasionally work better with older protocols, but in most environments WireGuard performs very well.

OpenVPN is one of the most widely used and trusted VPN protocols. It is known for its reliability, compatibility, and strong security.

The OpenVPN protocol is only supported by Bitdefender VPN on Windows and Android devices.

Bitdefender allows additional customization when OpenVPN is selected:

OpenVPN Connections

When using OpenVPN, you can choose between TCP and UDP connection types.

• UDP is generally faster and is commonly recommended for:
  • Streaming
  • Gaming
  • General browsing
  • Video conferencing

Because it prioritizes speed, UDP is often the preferred choice for everyday VPN usage.

• TCP focuses more on reliability and error correction. It can work better on unstable or restrictive networks where UDP traffic may be blocked or interrupted. TCP is commonly useful for:
  • Hotel Wi-Fi
  • Office networks
  • School networks
  • Restricted internet environments

The tradeoff is that TCP may feel slightly slower than UDP.

OpenVPN Ports

The Bitdefender app also allows you to choose different connection ports such as:

• 443
• 1194
• 8080
• 8443

A port is like a communication channel used for internet traffic.

Different networks sometimes block certain ports. Changing ports can help if the VPN struggles to connect.

For example:

• Port 443 is commonly used for secure HTTPS web traffic and is often the most reliable option because many networks allow it.
• Port 1194 is traditionally associated with OpenVPN.
• Ports 8080 and 8443 can sometimes help bypass restrictive firewalls.

Most users can leave the default port unchanged unless troubleshooting a connection issue.

Scramble

The Scramble switch adds obfuscation to OpenVPN traffic. In other words, it disguises VPN traffic so that restrictive networks have a harder time detecting and blocking VPN usage.

Some schools, workplaces, hotels, or countries attempt to identify VPN traffic and restrict access. Scramble helps the VPN connection appear more like normal internet traffic.

This feature may be helpful if:

• The VPN connects inconsistently
• VPN traffic is blocked
• Certain networks restrict VPN usage

Because additional processing is involved, enabling Scramble can sometimes reduce connection speed slightly.

IKEv2 is another VPN protocol included in the app.

It is known for:

• Stability
• Fast reconnection
• Good mobile performance

IKEv2 performs especially well when switching between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. For example, if you leave home Wi-Fi and your phone transitions to mobile data, IKEv2 can reconnect very quickly.

However, some platforms and network environments may provide broader compatibility with OpenVPN instead.
