Bitdefender VPN Protocols Explained: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2

A VPN protocol is the technology that determines how your internet traffic is encrypted and transmitted through the VPN connection. Different VPN protocols are designed with different priorities in mind, such as speed, security, battery efficiency, or compatibility with restrictive networks.

Bitdefender allows you to choose which protocol the VPN uses to establish a secure connection. In most cases, the default Automatic option works well because the app selects the protocol best suited for your device and network conditions. However, advanced users can manually switch protocols to optimize performance for activities like streaming, gaming, video calls, or connecting on restricted networks.

To change the protocol in the Bitdefender app or Bitdefender Hub, click your profile icon in the top-right corner, then select VPNProtocol.
