Bitdefender Expertise Helps International Law Enforcement In Takedown Of Global Dark Markets-3347

Bitdefender announces that its collaboration with Europol, the FBI and the US Department of Justice (DoJ) has led to the dismantling of Hansa, the world’s third-largest criminal marketplace.  

Bitdefender, a leading Internet security technology company protecting 500 million users worldwide, announces that its collaboration with Europol, the FBI and the US Department of Justice (DoJ) has led to the dismantling of Hansa, the world’s third-largest criminal marketplace.  Criminal activities had migrated en masse to Hansa after the takedown earlier this month of AlphaBay, the world’s largest criminal marketplace, estimated to have made more than 1 billion US dollars selling the same illicit goods and services as Hansa.

Bitdefender researchers worked with Europol and other law enforcement agencies to compile the technical evidence that led to the shutdown of Hansa, which sold illegal drugs, counterfeit products, firearms, malware and other illicit items. The operation is the result of more than a year of investigative work.

“This was an incredible effort from multiple international authorities and we are proud to have supported our partners at Europol,” said a Bitdefender spokespearson close to investigation. “We are glad to provide our technical expertise in fighting cyber-crime as our long-standing mission is to protect the world’s Internet users and organizations.”

As stated in a press release issued today, Europol has been supporting the investigation of criminal marketplaces on the Dark Web for a number of years. With the help of Bitdefender, an internet security company advising Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3), Europol provided Dutch authorities with an investigation lead into Hansa in 2016.
