BitDefender®, an award-winning provider of innovative internet security solutions,is celebrating Safer Internet Day by offering a variety of free applications, e-guides and other resources aimed at helping users navigate the Internet safely, without getting charged additional fees.

This month marks the eighth celebration of Safer Internet Day, and as BitDefender knows from its work with the growing number of Internet surfers, never has the focus of this effort been more important,” said Catalin Cosoi, Head of the BitDefender Online Threats Lab. “With the free applications, e-guides and other resources we’re offering today, BitDefender is doing its part to help make the Internet safer for users of all ages.”

The 8th edition of Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on the 8th of February 2011 in more than 60 countries across the world and this year.

With social networks increasingly becoming present in the lives of users, BitDefender has created Safego, a free security application to protect the profiles of Facebook users against links that lead to malicious websites, spam, phishing and other e- threats. The application can be added to any users’ profiles from the Safego Facebook application page.

Many Internet surfers find new programs and applications to download to their computer, and BitDefender has created another free application -- VirusGuard -- that protects users from any downloads containing malware. VirusGuard, which analyzes all torrent files to ensure they are free of malware, is available in the new BitTorrent App Studio. Virus Guard operates as an independent security application easily integrated into BitTorrent and uTorrent clients to scan the download once complete.

Another BitDefender application – QuickScan -- is an advanced online tool to detect malware running on users' computers. This tool, which includes new features to keep users safe and offers easy-to-understand information about popular e-threats on its new website, is a more user-friendly alternative compared to traditional scanning systems online. QuickScan can be accessed by visiting the QuickScan product page.

In addition to offering these applications, BitDefender is encouraging users to visit the Malware City blog, which users can access free tools to remove other malware such as Stuxnet, Lavandos.A, Carberp and many more e-threats. Users can access these downloads by visiting Malware City’s Downloads Page.

Finally, BitDefender has developed a series of e-guides for a variety of Internet surfers – from children to senior citizens -- explaining the different risks that all user face and offering tips for safe surfing. These e-guides also provides insights on the dangers associated with specific technologies, such as mobile devices and WiFi networks. These e-guides can be viewed and downloaded from BitDefender’s e-Guide Series page.
