Trojan.Peed.P

Spreading: medium
Damage: medium
Size: 20 - 47k
Discovered: 2007 Jan 20

SYMPTOMS:

Your computer may slow down. Increase network activity and multiple random named, hidden files (about 47k) will appear in almost every directory in the system.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION:

Trojan.Peed.P is formed by 2 components:
a) Main component. This is the main file (that contains the secondary component). Once it is executed it performs the following operations:
• It infects executable files. For every executable file, a new copy of the main viral file is created (with a random name and hidden attributes) in the same directory as the executable. This will increase the number of files on your hard drive.
• Every 4 seconds it enumerates all the windows from the system and close the ones that contain in there title name of antivirus products. It also closes processes like regedit or taskmgr.
• It searches email addresses on files smaller than 120k located on local disks. It filters some of the email addresses (that contains .gov, .mil, etc). It then sends itself via email. The subject may be one of the following strings

The mail will have as an attachment a file named : “Flash Postcard.exe”,” greeting postcard.exe” , “greeting card.exe” or “postcard.exe”;
• It may copy itself in %system% directory (usually with the name of alsys.exe). It will modify “HKLM\\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run” adding a new key “Agent” that runs the file copied in the %system% directory. This will ensure that the virus is executed when Windows starts.
• It drops and execute a program that will install the second component (wincom32.sys)
b) Second component (wincom32.sys). This is a rootkit component that will hide itself and its configuration file wincom32.ini. The following key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\wincom32) is created in order ensure that the driver is loaded when Windows starts. The “ini” file (wincom32.ini) contains a white list (a peers list of infected machine) and a black list. Wincom32.sys contains a secondary executable file that updates wincom32.ini. This executable can also download and run different files. It uses port 7871 UDP to communicate with other hosts (similar with a P2P network). It may receive commands to download from one of this hosts.

H2 2011 E-Threat Landscape Report - Overview

Twenty years ago, a revolutionary means of electronic communication was born. It would become so popular with all ages and professions that it is still the most used data communication mechanism even today: introducing the SMS – the short message service.

Today, mobile phones are more than bulky gadgets that can move voice and messages from one point to another: they are must-have gear in a World 2.0 – so powerful and so complex, running their own operating systems and, consequently, facing their share of cyber-trouble. While the first six months of 2011 were marked by software vulnerabilities and high-profile data breaches, the second half cast the spotlight on not only a new family of malware, but also uncovered a user espionage scandal that apparently involved an array of mobile phone carriers and the controversial software vendor CarrierIQ.

The malware landscape was dominated by Trojan.Autorun.Inf and Win32.Worm.Downadup, two malicious contenders that have roots in the Windows XP era, but managed to keep their places even though operating system upgrades or applying patches would have solved security issues exploited by these pieces of malware. The top contenders for H2 2011 are Trojan.AutorunInf, Win32.Worm.Downadup, and Exploit.CplLnk.

Data breaches attributed to the Anonymous gang and its satellite hacking groups continued throughout the second half of 2011. Among the most important targets were Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Adidas, RIM, Tiroler Gebietskrankenkasse, Nexon and even the United Nations. Corporate trust also came under close scrutiny, as the DigiNotar incident in H1 2011 exposed unwary users to a massive phishing attack that used stolen digital certificates generated for high-profile institutions and government agencies such as Google, Tor, CIA and Israel’s Secret Service, the Mossad.

Social networks have also played a key role in disseminating malware and spreading fake news about the deaths of high-profile personalities such as Muammar Gaddafi or Steve Jobs. Of particular importance were the malicious campaigns built around the alleged movie of Gaddafi’s execution and the commemorative giveaway in honor of the late Steve Jobs.
