A lawsuit filed in the District of Nebraska is accusing the Roblox Corporation of nurturing an environment in which child predators thrive.
The 90-page complaint claims that the gaming company has been prioritizing profit over child safety, which has exposed millions of children to exploitation and abuse.
The suit says that Roblox presented itself from the start as a “safe place for people of all ages, including very young children.” On its website, the company says it “takes kids’ safety and privacy very seriously” and offers “a family-friendly environment.”
However, the Nebraska filing paints a picture where predators use Roblox’s chat and game systems to identify and groom children.
The complaint cites some of Roblox’s internal decisions, leaked documents, and public reports to back the accusation that the company ignored basic safety to maintain growth metrics at any cost.
“You have to make a decision, right? You can keep your players safe, but then it would be less of them on the platform. Or you just let them do what they want to do. And then the numbers all look good and investors will be happy.”
It’s important to note is that the suit is brought by a 27-year-old who claims he was introduced to a predator on Roblox when he was 14 to 15 years old. Roblox has changed some of the guardrails in the past few years. However, the company is facing multiple lawsuits and not all of them deal with older features in the game of lack thereof.
According to the lawsuit, the way Roblox was built made it easy for adults to contact minors. Until late 2024, adults could message children directly, even without friend status.
The game’s lack of a proper age verification filter means that predators can simply fake their birthdates to bypass restrictions.
Despite Roblox’s moderation claims, investigators discovered hundreds of “condo” and “scented” games filled with simulated sexual acts, nudity, and adult roleplay accessible to children.
The plaintiff, John Doe, alleges that he was groomed and sexually assaulted by a 35–40-year-old predator who met him on Roblox at age 14. This assault, the lawsuit states, was due to “the unreasonably dangerous and defective design of its app.”
The complaint lists numerous safety measures that Roblox allegedly refused to implement, likely for financial reasons:
While the lawsuit targets Roblox’s internal failures, parents can take steps to protect children’s digital lives.
Bitdefender Parental Control helps:
According to the Nebraska complaint, Roblox misrepresented itself as a safe educational app while failing to prevent predators from interacting with children. Until systemic changes occur, parental supervision is essential.
Plaintiff John Doe requests compensatory and punitive damages for emotional trauma, loss of income, and lifelong mental health harm.
If found liable, Roblox may face massive financial penalties and regulatory action. It remains to be seen how the other lawsuits in Florida, Louisiana and California will impact how Roblox caters to kids under 18.
