Florida Goes After Roblox - Attorney General Subpoenas Internal Data and Prohibits Roblox from Deleting Anything

The State of Florida has launched a criminal investigation into Roblox, accusing the company of building an environment where child predators can target minors with ease.

Because Roblox is one of the most popular online gaming platforms worldwide, with more than 200 million monthly players, many of them children

Why Florida Is Taking Action

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has issued criminal subpoenas for Roblox’s internal data, moderation policies, and abuse reports, among many others. The southern state says that the company’s weak safety systems have “enabled our kids to be abused.”

Florida’s prosecutors claim that Roblox failed to protect minors from predators who are using the platform’s chat and currency system (Robux) to lure kids.

The subpoena demands detailed evidence on how Roblox:

· User account creation and verification. This includes methods Roblox uses to verify ages and to manage parental consent.

· Moderation and safety systems. The company has to reveal internal policies, chat moderation, and reporting mechanisms used to detect and prevent grooming or exploitation.

· Reports of abuse. Authorities want to know about every complaint or report from Florida users (or parents) alleging child exploitation, grooming, or any related crimes since 2021.

· Marketing materials. Authorities want to determine if Roblox misrepresented itself as “safe for all ages” or “child-friendly” in its marketing materials.

· Employee information. The prosecutors want to identify the staff responsible for moderation, child safety, and age verification.

Assistant Statewide Prosecutor Rita Pavan Peters, who signed the subpoena, issued the order under criminal-investigation authority, which means that organizations failing to comply with the subpoena could face criminal penalties under Florida law.

The subpoena also prohibits Roblox from deleting or altering any electronic records and requires it to preserve all relevant evidence.

Other States Are Joining the Fight

Florida’s action follows similar lawsuits in Louisiana and Kentucky, where attorneys general accused Roblox of prioritizing profit over child protection.

Even beyond abuse claims, Roblox is now facing a class-action lawsuit in California for allegedly collecting children’s personal data without proper consent.

What Parents Can Learn from This

All of these investigations and cases only strengthen the idea that parental awareness is the strongest defense. There’s no safety feature that can replace the direct involvement of parents and open conversation with them, but Bitdefender Parental Control can complement all of these measures.

If your child uses Roblox, you can take these steps

  1. Stay involved. Create your own Roblox account, explore the games, and understand what your child sees.
  2. Set restrictions. Use parental controls to limit who can message or play with your child.
  3. Talk early and often. Teach kids to recognize manipulation techniques and to come to you if something feels wrong.
  4. Follow the news. Legal actions like the one in Florida often highlight risks that platforms often downplay.
