Apple Taps Google’s Gemini to Power Siri, Says Privacy Remains a Priority

In a rare show of cooperation between two of tech’s fiercest rivals, Apple and Google have announced a multi-year partnership that will see Gemini powering the next generation of Siri.

The companies confirmed the move in a joint statement — marking one of the first times the pair has aligned formally on core AI technology — and promising commitment to user privacy amid industry concern over data practices.

“Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology,” the announcement reads.

Under the agreement, Apple Intelligence — the suite of AI-driven features across iPhones, iPads, and Macs — will tap Google’s advanced Gemini models and cloud infrastructure to deliver a more capable, personalized version of Siri expected to launch later this year.

“These models will help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri coming this year,” the duo said.

Apple said Google's Al tech is the sane choice as a baseline for Apple Foundation Models, adding that it looks forward to the new experiences it will unlock for consumers.

Focus on privacy

The iPhone maker notes that while Google’s technology forms the foundation for these upgrades, Apple Intelligence will still run on Apple devices and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute framework to protect user data and preserve privacy standards.

“Apple Intelligence will continue to run on Apple devices and Private Cloud Compute, while maintaining Apple's industry-leading privacy standards,” the Cupertino tech titan said.

Consumer trust in Big Tech

The focus on privacy speaks directly to rising consumer anxieties captured in the Bitdefender 2025 Consumer Cybersecurity Survey.

The report, based on responses from more than 7,000 consumers across seven countries, shows that users are increasingly wary of how their data is used –and by whom.

While the survey highlights widespread concern over cybersecurity threats — including AI-powered scams like deepfakes — it also underscores who consumers trust with their data and security.

Our survey shows household tech brands still hold the edge when it comes to perceived trustworthiness, compared to newcomers in AI or data-driven services. This makes Apple’s explicit pledge to maintain privacy safeguards in this partnership all the more critical.

By keeping AI processing on Apple devices or within its controlled cloud infrastructure, Apple aims to reassure customers that their queries, contextual data, and usage patterns won’t be shared indiscriminately or used in ways that could compromise privacy.
