Following a ransomware attack, threat actors encrypted Motility Software Solutions' systems and may have stolen sensitive customer information.
Motility Software Solutions, a long-standing provider of dealership management software, has confirmed a ransomware incident that compromised the personal information of about 766,000 individuals. The Florida-based company, formerly known as Systems 2000, supplies technology to more than 7,000 dealerships across the United States, spanning automotive, marine, RV, and heavy equipment retailers.
The attack occurred on Aug. 19, when unusual activity was detected on company servers. According to a filing with the Maine Attorney General’s office, the attack involved malware that encrypted portions of the company’s internal systems, restricting employee access to vital operational tools.
While the scale of the breach is substantial, specific details exposed differ from one person to another. Motility says the compromised files may include:
For some people, email addresses and customer portal credentials were also involved in the data breach.
Although the company emphasized that it has no proof of data misuse, the stolen information could be highly valuable for identity theft and fraud schemes if sold or leaked. Motility has engaged Dark Web monitoring services in an effort to detect and mitigate any circulation of the data on underground marketplaces.
Following the attack, Motility contacted forensic experts, restored systems from backups and rolled out new cybersecurity safeguards. At the time of writing, the company has not disclosed whether ransom negotiations took place or if communication with the perpetrators has been established. No ransomware group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
To support impacted individuals, Motility is offering a year of complimentary credit and identity monitoring services, leaving enrollment open until Dec. 19. Individuals affected by this issue are also encouraged to regularly review their credit reports and consider enabling fraud alerts or credit freezes to minimize risk.
