Monday`s Hacking Cocktail: Green Protests against Filipino Cybercrime Law, TinKode Short of $120,000 and WoW Mass Kill

A hacking attack targeting the Philippines` Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) came shortly after several other government websites were taken down due to the outrage over the new Filipino cybercrime law, reports the HackerNews. The defaced website was restored to normal operation within minutes.

The DENR hit posed quite a lot of offline security issues in as much as it was likely to disrupt official communications on natural disasters. Despite Anonymous Philippines` temporary ceasefire, a host of other attacks, each with its own motivation, spices things up for the Filipino government webmasters, as pointed out by zdnet.

Talking about living on the www edge, Romanian hacker Razvan Manole Cernaianu recently escaped jail time due to a two-year suspended sentence issued by a Romanian court, but got slapped with a $120,000 fine.

Having hacked into government and military websites and exposed sensitive data, Cernaianu was apprehended at the beginning of the year and received his final sentence in late September. According to the court decision, he is to pay sizeable compensations to ORACLE AMERICA, N.A.S.A., U.S. ARMY and the US Department of Defense “PENTAGON.

WoW faced a massive wave of avatar deaths due to a hack attack that took place Sunday, reports Forbes.

“Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities,” wrote Community Manager Nethaera, on a Blizzard forum. “This exploit has already been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable. It’s safe to continue playing and adventuring in major cities and elsewhere in Azeroth. As with any exploit, we are taking this disruptive action very seriously and conducting a thorough investigation.”

In August, battle.net came under hack fire and ended up having users` security questions, hashed passwords and authentication info leaked.
