What to do when Windows Security Center reports Antivirus, Antispyware and/or Firewall are turned off

Most of the times, when Security Center reports Bitdefender Antivirus and/or Firewall are turned off, it is just a display issue. In other words, while Bitdefender is working properly protecting your PC the status displayed in Action Center is showing otherwise not being able to check the real status.

There are 4 main steps you should follow to resolve this:

I. Try to turn them ON from Action Center

II. Make sure Bitdefender Antivirus&Antispyware are working properly

III. Make sure Bitdefender Firewall is working properly

Note: skip this step if you have Bitdefender Antivirus Plus or if Action Center is not reporting that Firewall is disabled

IV. Refresh Windows Security Center checking list

I. Try to turn them ON from Action Center

If there is only one option you can click on Turn on now > then “Yes, I trust this publisher and I want to run this program”.

If there are multiple choices please click on View antivirus programs/View antispyware programs/View firewall options and choose to turn on the Bitdefender feature(s).

If the issue persists go to the next step.

II. Make sure Bitdefender Antivirus&Antispyware are working properly

1.       Bring up the main Bitdefender interface and click on Settings from the top right corner;

2.       Go to Antivirus module and make sure the On-access scanning is ON;

3.       If the feature is OFF try to turn it on using the switch and check if the issue persists;

Note: if you cannot turn this feature on please repair Bitdefender

4.        Also, in order to make sure the On access scan is working properly turn it off for 5 minutes then turn it back on. Click on Custom/Modify button, try to change some settings, click OK, then go back and check if he settings are kept. After that click on Default button to restore it to default settings.

Note: if settings are not kept or you cannot turn off this feature please repair Bitdefender

5.       Moreover, you can run the Eicar test to make sure Bitdefender catches infections in real time. You will need to download a test file which should be detected by Bitdefender - this file is not infected in any way, it's just a file used to confirm that Bitdefender is properly protecting your PC.

Therefore click here to download the Eicar test file

Note: if you are using Internet Explorer the file might be caught by Smart Screen filter first. For the test to be effective, please temporary turn off this feature from the top right Settings gear > Safety > Turn off Smart Screen Filter > click OK to confirm. Try again to access the Eicar test file to test the Bitdefender Real Time Protection filter, then you can turn Smart Screen filter back on.

If all the tests were performed and passed, it means that Antivirus&Antispyware features are fully functional and your PC is protected from any malware attacks.

III. Make sure Bitdefender Firewall is working properly

1.       Find the Firewall panel in the main Bitdefender interface and make sure it is ON

2.       If the feature is OFF try to turn it on using the switch and check if the issue persists;

Note: if you cannot turn this feature on please repair Bitdefender

3.       You can also go to Settings > Firewall panel > click on Network Activity and check if the traffic is scanned – you can notice the sent and received bytes, dropped packets, outgoing and incoming traffic per second changing.

4.       Moreover, for an advanced checking, close the Network Activity window, then turn on Paranoid Mode (by doing so you will force the Firewall to prompt and ask user’s permission for each application trying to connect to internet instead of silently monitor and scan the traffic)

Go to Application rules, search for a familiar application, note down or remember its path, then select it and click on Remove Rule. Then try to start that specific application, make sure it is connecting to internet and Bitdefender should prompt on the bottom right corner asking you whether you wish to allow or block this application.  After finishing this test you can turn off Paranoid mode.

Note: if you are not seeing any prompt when starting the application please repair Bitdefender

If all the tests were performed and passed, it means that Firewall feature is fully functional, all the traffic being monitored and scanned.
