When you run a small business or work for yourself, it’s easy to spend hours in front of a screen, moving from one task or call to the next without ever really getting up and sitting far more than we realise.
By the end of the day, the work is done, but your body feels stiff, tired, and strangely drained. It has nothing to do with being unfit; it’s simply what happens when the body stays in one position for too long: blood flow slows, joints tighten, focus slips, and even your mood can change.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 46.9% of Australian adults say their job involves mostly sitting down, and only 22.4% met the physical activity guidelines in 2022. In England, one in four adults does less than 30 minutes of exercise in an entire week. In the United States, only about half of the adult population reaches the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Worldwide, the World Health Organization estimates that nearly 1.8 billion people are not moving enough.
The biggest issue is that our bodies weren’t designed to sit for hours the way we do in modern life. Experts warn that too much sitting is linked to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even certain cancers.
That’s why movement snacks have become such a helpful idea. They break up those stretches of sitting with short bursts of activity you can do in your everyday clothes, between tasks, or even on your way to the kitchen for a biscuit.
Movement snacks are short bursts of intentional activity you sprinkle throughout your day, usually a few minutes at a time. They’re tiny resets for your body that break up long periods of sitting without requiring gym clothes, equipment, a full workout session or a shower after.
A simple way to introduce them in your life is this rule: every hour, take a small break of at least three minutes to move your body and, as a bonus, take a sip of water while you’re at it. It’s enough to wake up your muscles and give your mind a quick reset, without disrupting your work.
Why movement snacks help:
• They get your blood flowing again, which helps your brain stay sharp and alert.
• They loosen stiff joints and reduce the aches that build up from sitting too long.
• They activate the muscles that support your posture, especially your core and back.
• They help you return to your tasks with more focus, clarity, and patience.
• They fit naturally between calls, emails, and tasks—so you’re not losing time, you’re gaining energy.
When they’re good for you, they’re good for your business. A body that feels better supports a mind that works better. Letting yourself move, even in small ways, often leads to more productive, more focused workdays. Once you get used to them, these short bursts of movement become a natural part of your day.
Walking is the easiest movement snack you can add to your routine, and it works for almost everyone. If you work in an office, you can turn part of your commute into a short walk getting off the bus one stop earlier or parking a little farther away.
If you work from home, try to build short walks into your day. A quick 5-minute loop outside can do more for your concentration than another coffee. Fresh air, daylight, and simply moving your body help clear your mind and break the sense of being “stuck” at the desk.
A treadmill works too, especially on days when the weather is impossible. But whenever you can, go outside. You think differently when your body moves through open space.

These are simple movement snacks you can fit into any busy day. They’re familiar, safe, and don’t require much space or any special setup. You can do them in your work clothes, between tasks, or while waiting for the kettle to boil.

We often tell ourselves we don’t have time to move, but the breaks are already there. You wait for the kettle to boil, you wait for meetings to start or you wait for files to upload. Those moments are perfect for a small stretch or a three-minute exercise.
You just need to use the little pockets of time you already have. For example, you can check your Bitdefender Ultimate Small Business Security dashboard while stretching your back, loosening your hips, or doing a quick round of calf raises.
If you’re curious why a security dashboard is worth checking and what it shows you about your business, you can find out more here.
