Europol dismantles major Dark Web drug hub Archetyp in a coordinated international operation that led to multiple arrests.
Europol and partner agencies have dismantled ‘Archetyp Market,’ a major drug marketplace that operated anonymously for over five years. Known for facilitating the sale of cocaine, MDMA and highly potent synthetic opioids, the platform had more than 600,000 users and processed an estimated €250 million in transactions.
The operation, dubbed Deep Sentinel, unfolded between June 11 and 13 and involved 300 officers in six countries. It resulted in the arrest of the market’s 30-year-old German administrator in Spain, as well as the apprehension of several top vendors and a moderator. Authorities took offline the marketplace’s infrastructure in the Netherlands and seized assets totaling €7.8 million.
The Archetyp Market homepage now displays an official seizure banner, a common police tactic to publicly mark the dismantling of illegal platforms and raise awareness.
Aside from the banner, which bears the logos of participating agencies, authorities also published a video to amplify the operation’s visibility.
“With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web’s longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world’s most dangerous substances,” said Europol’s Deputy Executive Director of Operations Jean-Philippe Lecouffe. “By dismantling its infrastructure and arresting its key players, we are sending a clear message: there is no safe haven for those who profit from harm.”
Although Archetyp Market’s main activity was drug trafficking, the Dark Web harbors a broader spectrum of dangers. Threat actors generally rely on it for its anonymous nature, which often enables them to run illicit schemes.
Many such marketplaces also host services that target everyday internet users, including malware-for-hire, stolen credentials, spyware kits, and identity data dumps. Cybercriminals use these platforms to sell access to botnets, phishing kits or tools to compromise devices.
Just weeks before Archetyp’s takedown, Europol coordinated Operation Endgame, a large scale effort targeting ransomware affiliates and infrastructure, leading to multiple arrests and the dismantling of servers used by major threat groups.
During the same operation, Europol seized servers tied to the SmokeLoader botnet, a long-standing tool used by cybercriminals to deliver malware and steal sensitive data.
Unfortunately, the Dark Web remains a cesspool of illegal activity, often intertwined with cybercrime.
Dedicated software like Bitdefender Ultimate Security can help you fend off cyberthreats from both the public and the Dark Web.
It offers complete, real-time data protection against viruses, worms, spyware, Trojans, zero-day exploits, ransomware, rootkits, and other digital intrusions. Its key features include network threat prevention, behavioral detection for active apps, cryptomining protection, ransomware protection, and AI-fueled scam detection.
