WhatsApp Introduces Passwordless Chat Backup Encryption for iOS and Android

WhatsApp users can now protect chat history with biometrics instead of remembering passwords.

Passkeys bring simpler, stronger backup protection

WhatsApp is rolling out a new passkey-based encryption system that lets users secure their chat backups using biometrics or screen locks rather than lengthy passwords or cumbersome encryption keys. The feature, now available on iOS and Android, enhances backup privacy by relying on cryptographic key pairs – a private key stored locally on the user’s device and a public key shared with the app.

This design prevents credentials from being exposed in data breaches, as the private key never leaves the device. In practice, users can now encrypt backups with a fingerprint, facial recognition or a simple device PIN, unifying backup security with the same protection used for personal chats.

Extending end-to-end encryption to cloud backups

The feature can be enabled via Settings -> Chats -> Chat Backup -> End-to-End Encrypted Backup, where users will find the new passkey option. Once active, it secures future chat backups stored on iCloud for iOS users and Google Drive for Android users. Meta confirmed that the rollout is underway globally and will continue over the coming weeks.

The move, which follows WhatsApp’s introduction of end-to-end encrypted backups in 2021, adds another layer of privacy to stored data. By simplifying the encryption process, WhatsApp reduces friction for users who may have avoided setting up encrypted backups due to password complexity.

Strengthening privacy across the ecosystem

The introduction of passwordless backup encryption aligns with Meta’s broader privacy and safety strategy. Earlier this month, the company announced new anti-scam protections for both Messenger and WhatsApp, expanding its suite of tools designed to shield users from fraudulent behavior.

As messaging platforms become more secure, scams and social engineering attempts continue to adapt. Users seeking an extra layer of safety beyond built-in app protections can turn to tools like Bitdefender Scamio, an AI-powered assistant that helps verify suspicious links, messages, emails, images, QR codes, or even described scenarios in real time. Combining advanced encryption with active scam detection ensures that privacy and awareness go hand in hand in today’s digital landscape.
