Roblox Hit with Child Protection Lawsuit, Quickly Announces New Safety Policies

Roblox is now facing a significant a legal challenge after Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit directly accusing it of enabling child sexual exploitation.

Almost immediately after the lawsuit was filed, Roblox said it had introduced stricter rules on sexual content, more precise age verification, and a new automated detection systems to better filter inappropriate content.

The lawsuit: Roblox as a "Perfect Place for Predators"

The lawsuit in Louisiana portrays Roblox as a company that lets predators thrive on its platform. According to the complaint, Roblox "knowingly enabled and facilitated the systemic sexual exploitation and abuse of children." Moreover, the lawsuit claims that the company failed to warn parents about the dangers online.

Murrill cites a July 2025 case in which Louisiana police arrested a man suspected of possessing child sexual abuse materials while actively using Roblox. The suspect is accused of using voice-altering software that could mimic a young girl to lure minors.

According to the numbers provided by Roblox and cited by the lawsuit, the platform has 82 million daily active users.

The company reports:

  • 20% of users are under 9 years of age
  • 20% are 9-12
  • 16% are 13-16
  • 44% are 17 years of age or older

"Because there is no age minimum and requirement to verify age or parental permission once you sign-up, users can easily say they are younger or older than their actual age - allowing child predators to pose as children and for children to bypass any age requirement," says Murrill.

A recent report found that 3,334 members allegedly openly traded child pornography and solicited sexual acts from minors.

The state of Louisiana is accusing Roblox of lying about safety, failing to protect children, and profiting from it. If the state wins, Roblox could face millions in fines, be forced to refund money, cover legal costs, and follow court-ordered safety requirements.

Roblox's policy shift

Immediately after the lawsuit was filed, Roblox said it has begun to overhaul its safety framework. Firstly, the company changed its policy to clearly explain that anything that even suggests sexual activity is completely banned. Previous loopholes in which players created "implied" adult scenarios are now forbidden.

Games that include private spaces (like bedrooms or bathrooms) or adult settings (like clubs and bars) will now be restricted to ID-verified users over the age of 17. That means you can't just click "I'm 18" anymore — you have to prove it.

Creators now need to fill out a safety and maturity questionnaire before their games go live. If they lie in these questionnaires, the games will be removed and the creator banned.

Roblox is also promising to roll out new AI tools that can scan games and servers in real time. If the system detects inappropriate content or repeat violations, it can shut down that server automatically, without human input.

Also, while Roblox introduced more strict parental controls, there's room for improvement. For example, there will be stricter default safety settings for kids under 13 years of age, better age estimation techniques that can determine if the user is lying about their age, and clearer maturity labels for games.

The legal battle has already affected Roblox's stock, which had more than doubled this year, and dropped more than 10% following the lawsuit.
