Unknown Attackers Compromise Western Digital Systems; My Cloud Taken Offline

Unknown attackers compromised Western Digital's security and gained access to several systems in a network security incident, the company said in a press release.

The company added that they’ve taken some systems offline, including My Cloud, to try to contain the situation. The firm, though, didn't go into detail.

"On March 26, 2023, Western Digital identified a network security incident involving Western Digital's systems," the company explained. "In connection with the ongoing incident, an unauthorized third party gained access to a number of the Company's systems."

"Upon discovery of the incident, the company implemented incident response efforts and initiated an investigation with the assistance of leading outside security and forensic experts. This investigation is in its early stages and Western Digital is coordinating with law enforcement authorities," the company added.

Attackers gaining entry to a company's infrastructure has become much more common, and no organization is safe, no matter its size. In fact, the larger the company, the greater the probability of some sort of security incident.

Western Digital is also talking about actively working to restore impacted infrastructure and services, which could mean a much more severe type of attack. The investigation's focus is now in another direction as WD tries to determine what kind of data the attackers accessed and to understand the nature and scope of that data.

More information about the security incident is sure to follow in the coming weeks.
