Breach at Healthcare Provider CentroMed exposes personal data on 400,000 Patients

Health provider CentroMed (also known as El Centro Del Barrio) is alerting current and former patients of a data breach after unauthorized individuals gained access to its IT systems.

This is the second data breach disclosed by the CentroMed in less than a year.

According to a notice from the integrated primary care clinic, the most recent cyberattack occurred around April 30, affecting the personal and health information of 400,000 patients, including:

  • Patient names, physical addresses, and date of birth
  • Social Security numbers and financial account details
  • Medical records and health insurance information
  • Diagnosis and treatment data alongside any claims information

“On May 1, 2024, we were alerted to unusual activity in our information technology (“IT”) network. Upon learning of this, we immediately took steps to secure our systems and launched an investigation,” CentroMed’s data breach notice reads. “Through our investigation, we determined that an unauthorized party gained access to our IT network on or about April 30, 2024. While in our IT network, the unauthorized party accessed and/or acquired files that contain information pertaining to CentroMed’s current and former patients.”

How can patients impacted by this data breach safeguard their identity and finances?

Given the sensitive nature of potentially compromised patient information, individuals should safeguard their privacy and the security of their financial accounts with these measures:

  • Review statements received from any healthcare providers
  • Immediately alert the healthcare provider if you notice any health services you haven’t requested or received
  • Monitor financial accounts closely and notify your financial institution in case of fraudulent activity
  • Place a fraud alert or credit or security freeze
  • Remain vigilant against unrequested messages and correspondence
