Bitdefender BOX unveiled its breakthrough security features at Pepcom NY

The Internet of Things (IoT) or Internet of Threats, as we often call it, has been labeled “the next Industrial Revolution” by journalists because of the way it will change the way people live.

As BI Intelligence projects, there will be 34 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020, from 10 billion in 2015. IoT devices will account for 24 billion, while traditional computing devices (e.g. smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, etc.) will comprise 10 billion. Nearly $6 trillion will be spent on IoT solutions over the next five years.

It’s been more than a year since Bitdefender launched its integrated home cybersecurity solution for the IoT, Bitdefender BOX. And we are still the only security company with such a product. During the past week, we have discovered more than 30,000 vulnerabilities in IoT devices in our customers’ networks.

As IoT continues to develop, and threats do the same, two major advancements have been released to continue to secure efficiently all devices connected to the Internet.

First of all, we have significantly improved the device detection engine, and we’ve applied for a patent for this technology. This is done by correlating information about the devices, and it helps users map the devices in the network and securely manage each one.

Secondly, the new vulnerability assessment module helps users that are not aware of the security risks in their home to find devices with weak passwords, gadgets that talk without encryption over the Internet and perform authentications in unencrypted form.

Moreover, we are looking in all the networks protected by BOX for things correlated with the common vulnerability database, which aggregates all the common vulnerabilities in all the devices worldwide.

BOX now incorporates Bitdefender awarded protection technologies like ATC to block these attacks before they can do any serious damage. That means shifting from device-oriented security to a solution able to protect an unlimited number of gadgets by intercepting attacks at their core: the network.

“All the smart doorbells, baby monitors, smart dolls and door locks make our lives easier and enable us to save precious time that we can invest more efficiently into other things”, Bitdefender’s Chief Security Researcher Alex Balan says. “But much like it’s the case with software, they’re not perfect we’ve discovered that most of them can be easily hacked. A big issue here is that it’s not as easy to update your thermostat’s firmware and, frankly, in most cases you don’t even know you have to. With this latest update, BOX not only tells you which device in your house can be easily hacked but also how and gives you very easy to understand remediation solutions. And we won’t stop here. BOX is a platform that enables us to deliver more functionality and more security to our users from the cloud as soon as it’s ready with no effort on their part”.

Bitdefender BOX is a forward-thinking, powerful service facilitated by apps, hardware and cloud intelligence that acts as an antivirus for networks and provides advanced malware protection for all connected devices. Find out more on bitdefender.com/box
