Ready, Set, Go! First Worldwide Windows Hackathon

Microsoft launched a hackathon for Windows in more than 30 locations around the world to encourage developer interest in creating programs and applications for the operating system, according to a media release.

This is the first time the Redmond-based company organizes a hacking competition worldwide. WOWZAPP 2012 is aimed at students, developers and entrepreneurs interested in developing apps using Windows 8, the platform to be launched next week.

“Students and other types of developers across countries such as India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey, Finland, Chile and Greece will work in teams to develop apps that will be published and available for download in the Windows Store,” the company said.

Hackathon participants will receive resources such as Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows 8, and free Windows Store registration codes, available through DreamSpark. Before submitting the apps, students and developers can test them with experts and trainers. The Windows hackathon WOWZAPP 2012 is scheduled for November 9-11.

Windows 8 already faces issues with the way it stores passwords for local accounts after a flaw was discovered by a Passcape Software team. For more information on how this type of vulnerability can be exploited check HotForSecurity.
