How to upgrade Security for Virtualized Environments to version 1.2

Security for Virtualized Environments (SVE) is the first comprehensive security solution for virtualized datacenters. The solution protects virtualized Windows, Linux, and Solaris systems, both servers and desktops. While integrated with VMware vShield, the unique architecture of the solution allows it to be leveraged when using any system virtualization offering.

This article shows you how to upgrade an older deployment of Security for Virtualized Environments to version 1.2, released in May 2012. To find out more about this new version, check the release notes.

Upgrade Instructions for VMware vSphere Environments

The upgrade procedure for VMware vSphere environments depends on the Security for Virtualized Environments version installed in your environment:

  • The previous publicly available version of Security for Virtualized Environments (released in February 2012) can be upgraded automatically from the Security Console web interface. Alternatively, the upgrade can be performed by completely removing the existing deployment and then deploying the new version.
  • Older versions can only be upgraded manually, by completely removing the existing deployment and then deploying the new version.

To find out which SVE version is installed in your environment:

1.    Connect to Security Console via HTTPS.
2.    At the bottom of the page, check the Security Console build number. The build number for the February 2012 release is 1.0.0.548.

Existing users have been sent an email with the SVE 1.2 Quick Start Guide, which includes the new download link for the SVE Security Console appliance and quick instructions for a fresh installation. If you have not received such an email, contact the Bitdefender Business Support.

To upgrade your SVE deployment, check the automatic and manual upgrade instructions provided hereinafter and the information provided in the Quick Start Guide.

Automatic Upgrade

What you need to know before starting the automatic upgrade:

  • Upgrade is performed from the Security Console web interface.
  • The upgrade of the SVE appliances is a two-step process: first upgrade to an intermediary version, then upgrade to version 1.2.
  • You do not need to remove Silent Agent installations. After upgrading the SVE appliances, you can redeploy Silent Agent on virtual machines (for example, using the new Silent Deploy feature) and the upgrade is performed automatically.

To automatically upgrade from the February 2012 release to version 1.2:

1.    Prerequisite: Check that all Security Virtual Appliance instances installed in your environment are up and running and that they communicate with the Security Console appliance. For example, appliances must be powered on.
2.    Connect to Security Console via HTTPS.
3.    Go to the Computers > Deployments page. You can see that updates are available for installed appliances, as in the following table:

Appliance                                Current Version                  Update Version
Security Console                   1.0.0.548                               1.0.0.574
Security Virtual Appliance    1.0.0.549                                1.0.0.568

4.    Click the Update link corresponding to the Security Console appliance to upgrade all installed appliances to the intermediary version (the Security Console update automatically triggers the Security Virtual Appliance update).
5.    Wait for the upgrade process to complete on all machines.  During the Security Console upgrade, you will be logged out and informed that an upgrade is underway. Wait for the upgrade to finish and for the login page to reappear.
6.    Log in to Security Console again and return to the Computers > Deployments page. You can notice the current version has changed for all deployed appliances. After a while, new update versions appear, as in the following table:

Appliance                                Current Version              Update Version
Security Console                   1.0.0.574                           1.2.x.nnn
Security Virtual Appliance    1.0.0.568                           1.2.x.nnn

Note
The exact version number at the time of release is 1.2.0.936 for both Security Console and Security Virtual Appliance.

7.    Update Security Console again to the newest version by clicking the Update link.
When you log in to Security Console after the final upgrade, you can notice that the Computers menu has changed:

  • The Deployments page has been renamed to Security VMs.
  • A new Silent Agents page has been added. From this new page, you can remove or upgrade the Silent Agent deployments.

The older version of Silent Agent is not automatically recognized by Security Console. You must deploy Silent Agent on virtual machines to upgrade older agents. Version 1.2 introduces a new Silent Deploy task, which allows you to easily deploy Silent Agent on virtual machines (including those running on Linux or Solaris). For more information, refer to the SVE 1.2 Quick Start Guide sent to you by email.

Manual Upgrade

To manually upgrade from the February 2012 release to version 1.2, remove the existing deployment and then deploy the new version using the download links and instructions in the SVE 1.2 Quick Start Guide sent to you by email.

Note
You do not need to remove Silent Agent installations. After upgrading the SVE appliances, you can redeploy Silent Agent on virtual machines (for example, using the new Silent Deploy feature) and the upgrade is performed automatically.

When removing SVE, do not directly remove the Security Virtual Appliance from vCenter Server (using vSphere Client). It is very important to correctly remove SVE from your environment by following these steps:

1.    Prerequisite: Check that all Security Virtual Appliance instances installed in your environment are up and running and that they communicate with the Security Console appliance. For example, appliances must be powered on.
2.    Connect to Security Console via HTTPS.
3.    Go to the Computers > Deployments page.
4.    Remove each Security Virtual Appliance by clicking the corresponding Remove link. During removal, the Security Virtual Appliance is unregistered from vShield Endpoint.
5.    When all Security Virtual Appliance instances have been removed successfully, remove the Security Console from vCenter Server. In vSphere Client, power off the appliance, then right-click it and choose Delete from Disk.

Upgrade Instructions for Citrix XenServer/Microsoft Hyper-V Environments

The upgrade procedure for Citrix XenServer/Microsoft Hyper-V environments is entirely manual. You must first completely remove the existing deployment and then deploy the new version. Existing users have been sent an email with the SVE 1.2 Quick Start Guide, which includes the new download links for the SVE appliances and quick instructions for a fresh installation. If you have not received such an email, contact the Bitdefender Business Support.

To remove the older SVE version from your Citrix XenServer/Microsoft Hyper-V environment:

1.    Remove Silent Agent from the virtual machines. From the Security Console Computers page, select all managed computers and click Tasks > Uninstall Silent Agent.
2.    Remove all Security Virtual Appliance instances.
3.    Remove the Security Console appliance.
