How to control the USB devices on your network

BitDefender Client Security is an easy to use business security and management solution, which delivers superior proactive protection from viruses, spyware, rootkits, spam, phishing and other malware. It offers the following components: BitDefender Management Server (with/without add-on), BitDefender Local Update Server, BitDefender Business Client and BitDefender Management Agent.

In order to improve the security of your network, you need to have control over the USB devices. These are known to be a possible security breach by allowing users to connect USB Sticks, HDD's and other devices in order to copy onto or from them information. This, combined with the Autorun function from Microsoft Windows, can lead to infection spreading. First on a machine and from there to the rest of the workstations inside the local network. It does not matter if you have a large network or a small one, all the workstations are equiped with USB ports. You need to make sure that they are not used in order to infect your network. There are particular viruses that infect the USB Memory Sticks or hard-drives and deploy on the machine the moment you plug it in.
You need to make sure that you prevent this from happening by using three designated tools available to you in the BitDefender Client Security solution. These are:

1. The Device Scanning Policy can be configured from Policies - Create new Policy meniu on the left side of the BitDefender Management Console.  Select the policy and click on Next.

Device Scanning Policy

         a.  By default, several options are already checked. If you want to scan only the USB storage devices,  uncheck the other options. Also, if you want, you can specify the Notification settings and the Scan Options and Actions. The default ones are suitable just fine. After setting up the policy, click on Next.

         b.  Now select the workstations on which you want to apply this policy, or the pre-created groups and click on Next.

         c.  As a final step, you have the option to schedule the policy. Once finished, click on Save Policy to apply it to the selected group/workstations.

2. The Enable/Disable Autorun for all Mediums network task can be configured from the Network Tools -> Tasks -> Create new Network Task meniu on the left side of the BitDefender Management Console. Select the task and click on Next.

Enable/Disable Autorun

         a.  Select the option to Disable Autorun and click on Next.
