Enterprise and Commerce sector businesses were the most affected by DDoS attacks in the third quarter of 2013, according to Akamai’s report.
The Enterprise sector led the victims list, with 127 reported DDoS attack in the quarter. The Commerce and Media & Entertainment sectors were next on the list of attack priorities, suffering 80 and 40 incidents, respectively, in the same period.
“As of the end of the third quarter, customers had already reported more DDoS attacks than they did in all of 2012,” David Belson, Sr. Director, Industry & Data Intelligence at Akamai Technologies said.
Port 445 (Microsoft-DS) was the most used in DDoS attacks, accounting for 23 per cent of all attacks, as it is always open and used by Windows Sharing. Port 80 (WWW/HTTP) and port 443 (SSL/HTTPS) were used in 14 per cent and 13 per cent of the time.
The study also showed that a company hit by a DDoS attack suffers a 25 per cent chance of being attacked again in the following three months.
