Bitdefender software proves best at thwarting fake banking sites, other phishing URLs

Bitdefender, the maker of the world’s foremost antivirus software, has proven the best in the industry at detecting phishing attempts in extensive testing by independent analysis firm AV- Comparatives.

In July testing that pitted 18 leading antivirus software providers against 574 actual, live phishing URLs extracted from recent attack e-mails, Bitdefender Internet Security 2012 came out No. 1.

Bitdefender blocked 97.4 percent of all URLs, shutting down attempts to fraud users of PayPal, eBay, numerous online banks, social networks, online gaming sites, credit card data and more.

“Bitdefender has made serious advances in heading off online fraud through phishing that often confounds other security software –and it’s seriously paying off,”said Bitdefender Chief Security Researcher Catalin Cosoi. “We are clearly the world’s best at fighting phishing attempts and our security is just getting better as we introduce new innovations such as Bitdefender Safepay™.

Bitdefender Safepay™ delivers the latest blow to online theft and fraud, protecting users with a secured browser that keeps online transactions private and secure. The new feature, which activates automatically when users access their bank accounts, was not included in the July round of testing.

“Phishing can be a particularly damaging form of online crime, so we were eager to see how the software providers would perform in this test,” said Andreas Clementi of AV-Comparatives.

In general antivirus testing by AV Comparatives last month, Bitdefender also won the highest score, reaching a protection rate of 99.6 percent. Bitdefender has also recently won an Editor’s Choice award from PC Mag, and has won the top spot in seven rounds of testing by independent testing firm AV-TEST.
